Crossing Lines of Wire

Crossing Lines of Wire, New York, 2002

Fishing wire 30ft. x 4ft. x 450ft. Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island, New York.

I installed a fishing line spanning back and forth across the ‘crossing fire’ of the dry moat, moving from gun slot to gun slot. At first they appear like a floating mist, forming a nebulous cloud of line, the delicate lines constrasting wirh the heavy granite walls. As ones walks through, the lines seperate and begin to appear and disappear. This symbol of military aggression and power is dimished by the presence of lines that appear to sew the walls together. It is like a giant web, a barely visible series of barriers and traps.
